What good are patents

Unknown
OK, so we know some bad stuff already about patents such as Keeping others out of the market and restricting competitors; but here is what most people do not know.

Patents actually lead to more innovation and inventions because when someone has filed a patent on an idea; they force inventors to disclose information about an invention to the public. Hence we get to have a glimpse on some upcoming technology like the Samsung flexible phone (http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/samsung-patents-flexible-devices/ )

Also this leads to discovering new routes of solving problems because some one has already patented the previously discovered route, even though it causes more time , but who knows what can be found by searching harder may blow off the previously patented discovery and prove to be more useful.

So next time who hear about a squabble between Apple and Samsung over patents rights do not look at it as a bad thing in the end the consumer wins.
